About CoreChair

CoreChair principle Patrick Harrison, a Kinesiologist and Seating/Positioning Expert, set out to design an active sitting office chair that optimizes sitting posture and encourages movement to increase health, comfort and cognitive function.

The result was the CoreChair, a validated, innovative sitting solution offering individual comfort and health, Employer ROI, and environmental sensibility. The product is supported by excellence in education, customer support and satisfaction.

CoreChair is inspired by individuals who bring an exercise ball to their office to replace their ergonomic office chair and is bolstered by a growing media awareness on the perils of sitting or “sitting disease”.

Independent studies have been conducted with favourable outcomes from Mayo Clinic, Arizona State University, Cornell University, University of Waterloo, Guelph University and Memorial University, among others. CoreChair is currently being sold internationally with thousands of happy active sitters, with relief of back pain being the most prominent success reports.

Meet Patrick Harrison- Full Length Bio

Often known as a serial entrepreneur, Patrick Harrison graduated from the University of Waterloo in 1981 with a degree in Kinesiology, specializing in biomechanics and sports medicine. He was awarded a prestigious UofW Alumni Achievement Award in 2013 for his commitment to the profession, support of student education, research activities on projects, and contributions to society.

Patrick’s first business was focused on the design, manufacture and distribution of specialized seating solutions for individuals dependent on wheelchairs for mobility. As a leading-edge designer in this field, he invested heavily into researching the biomechanics of sitting, human anthropometrics, and physiology. This research led to product designs that enhanced quality of life for this population on an international scale. This business was sold to Invacare Corp of Elyria, Ohio, in 1995.

Unwilling to settle into a leisurely retirement, Patrick spent much of his time in philanthropic ventures. He enjoyed roles in various charitable organizations, including senior health services and sports organizations. His intrigue toward the science of human body movement has never waned.

In 2008, Patrick began to create an active sitting solution as an ergonomic enhancement for deskbound employees that focused on movement to encourage increased metabolic output and stimulation of muscle activity. As the project took shape, it became apparent that many secondary problems that office chair users experience could also be addressed. This resulted in a complete design of the CoreChair, an office chair including a mechanism that encourages movement, as well as the human interface that provides comfort and optimized sitting posture.

A strong science background in Kinesiology complements professions such as Physical Therapy, Chiropractic and Ergonomics. Patrick’s specific expertise in seating and positioning, ergonomics, biomechanics, physiology, and equipment design allow him to be an expert on the challenges associated with traditional equipment design and workplace ergonomics.

With career experiences involving clinical intervention for persons with severe physical challenges, Patrick has a thorough comprehension of how the human body operates. He is a confident speaker on the topic of human movement, with a wealth of knowledge on the physiological effects associated with inactivity. As a research-based entrepreneur, Patrick has embraced the challenge of creating an innovative solution that challenges the status quo of traditional chair design through the patented design of CoreChair.

The design process spanned almost eight years of intense engineering, field trials, testing and evidenced-based studies with five different North American universities. The outcomes of these studies have assisted in product design evolution, as well as validating the efficacy of the design hypothesis.

CoreChair now has thousands of happy users and is commercially available throughout North America, as well as ever-growing international markets throughout Europe and Australasia. The significant claim for success is resolving back pain, but the greater objective is to add quality of life through the benefits of perpetual motion.

While focusing his energies on the development of a solution in the form of a commercial product, Patrick acknowledges that the CoreChair is only one part of the solution toward the prevention of sedentariness. His recommendations expand beyond to include general health considerations in the form of exercise, diet and sleep, as well as habits that office workers should consider adopting to encourage healthy movement throughout their day.

As part of a healthy and active lifestyle, one significant highlight of Patrick’s life was the completion of the 2007 Lake Placid IronMan. When he is not tuning his general fitness in the gym, he participates in a variety of sports, such as tennis, basketball, and skiing.

Patrick is married to Lisa Forsyth, a certified personal trainer. He enjoys the success of his two grown children and a healthy, happy grandson. Patrick is also the proud stepfather of Lisa’s two teenage sons.
